Respect the Mountain

May 1, 2026
A sudden rainbow arcs across a rugged mountain ridge in the Angeles National Forest, framed by pine trees and a broken branch — symbolizing nature’s power, unpredictability, and beauty after a high-elevation storm

Sometimes the lesson is already whispered before the first step. The forecast called for rain, and Ella advised caution. Mike chose to go anyway — because mountains are stubborn teachers, and sometimes you only learn by walking into their classroom.

But about 15% into the route, the mountain spoke louder: rain, then lightning, then the kind of sky that makes you stop mid-stride. That’s when the decision came — to turn back. Not out of weakness, but out of respect.

The trail offered a rainbow on the descent, like a quiet nod of approval. And the validation was unmistakable: a squad of around thirty Orange County Sheriff’s deputies, out for their Training Day, had also chosen to retreat. Strength is not about pushing through at any cost. Strength is knowing when the cost is too high.

On this day, the summit wasn’t the victory. The wisdom was. ⚡🌈

Tomorrow, the trail will be waiting — and so will the test. This reflection is the compass; the log and science to come are the map.
